Salvador Dali Museum Exhibit

"Bed and Two Bedside Tables Ferociously Attacking a Cello", it is one of 12 Salvador Dali works loaned for a temporary exhibit to the Salvador Dali Museum in St. Petersburg, Fla., from the National Collection of Modern Art in Spain. The works are on display at the Florida museum until March 31, 2013 in a show called "The Royal Inheritance: Dalì Works From the Spanish National Collection." The paintings, which span from 1918 to 1983, have never before been exhibited the United States.

Salvador Dali's connection to Film "As Good as it Gets"

Salvador Dali's works and life have influenced everyone from Woody Allen to Lady Gaga, but one connection to film and media may not be as well known. James L Brooks is known for his work on The Simpsons film, Broadcast News, Taxi, Mary Tyler Moore show and many others. Brooks love of Dali becomes apparent in the Epiphany scene in The Simpsons as shown here, a creation that resembles the well known painting at the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) titled: "Persistence of Memory" by Salvador Dali.

You can see the obvious reference when you compare the images.

Brooks is also known for the film "As Good As It Gets" with Jack Nicholson and Helen Hunt.

Look at this image of Jack Nicholson as he sits and works on his book as the character Melvin Udall, a misanthrope novelist in New York who resides not far from where Dali lived for 10 years in the

 1960's and 70's.

If you look at the portait on the wall of Udall's apartment, you see an image of Salvador Dali.

Another and very obvious Dali reference in the film takes place when Greg Kinnear's character Simon Bishop is inspired to start creating art again once he sees Helen Hunts character Carol Connely sitting on the edge of a tub about to bathe. Notice the position of the towell on her lap and the position she is seated in and then look at the image below that shows one of Dali's best known works which features a nude Gala, Dali's wife.

Tallahassee Community College Showing Salvador Dali

Tallahassee, Florida -September 20, 2012

You won't have to go to the Met or du Louvre to catch a glimpse of some world-class art.

For the next few months, Tallahassee Community College is showing the works of Salvador Dali at its library. It's part of the Dali on Tour Collection. The exhibit contains reproductions of some of Spanish surrealist most famous works such as Geopoliticus Child Watching.

"We are just very excited to have it. It's a first for the TCC library and we are hoping it's the beginning of a lot of fun and interesting cultural events for students," says Deborah Robinson with TCC.

The works are on display until November 15. There are about 30 works all together in the collection .

The art fund market has gone global

As interest in art as an alternative asset class continues to grow among sophisticated investors, we are finding there is an equivalent rise in the number of investment vehicles dedicated to art and other so-called “investments of passion.” Today we are seeing investment vehicles include everything from art, wine and violin funds to classic automobiles. Interest in all forms of passion assets has been accelerating at a rapid pace globally, with a new and discernible demand coming from China. The desire by Chinese investors in particular to preserve the value of their assets against high inflation and market volatility is spurring financial innovation in passion assets.

In our 2011 survey on the art and passion fund market we identified in excess of 40 art and passion investment vehicles at various stages of their development operating in over 13 different countries. Since then, Deloitte has estimated that the global art fund market reached approximately US $960 million in 2011, up from U.S. $760 million in 2010. With over 21 art funds established in China alone since 2010, according to Deloitte’s 2011 Art and Finance Report, one must ask if this rapid rise can be sustained. Art funds in India, which were, in many respects, pioneers in art investment vehicles, have come into the spotlight in the last several years for their poor investment performance due to lack of transparency and investment discipline. However, with the emergence of greater regulatory reform art funds in India are entering a new phase in their evolution and are likely to re-emerge stronger as they rebuild their operating models and invest in robust systems, processes and controls.

Developments in the US and Europe

While we are aware of a number of new art and passion investment vehicles under development this year in the U.S. and Europe, in our estimation the number of active funds has not changed substantially since 2010. To date, the amount of capital raised by art funds in general remains low relative to mainstream alternative investments such as hedge funds and private equity funds, and so far they lack the size and scale required to attract most institutional investors.

In 2009, a combination of factors—including the ongoing financial crisis, the Bernard Madoff scandal and loss of investor confidence—created a difficult capital raising environment for most alternative investment vehicles; art funds were no exception. Investors today are conducting wider-ranging and more in-depth evaluation of alternative funds than ever before as the past few years have brought risk management concerns into sharper focus. Although high net worth investors are gaining appetite for passion investments they are likely to be extremely selective as they decide which investment vehicles deserve their money and will remain slow to commit themselves to new funds which lack an established track record of performance. Recently we have seen the emergence of privately managed accounts from art fund managers seeking to provide investors with higher levels of transparency and control. A managed art account is segregated from any other pool of funds the art fund manager may provide service to, and is tailored to the needs of a specific investor.

Demand for portfolio diversification

Following the events of the past several months we have seen some new momentum around art and other passion investment vehicles among private investors amid the turmoil in the financial markets. Since our last report there have been a number of new developments which could significantly influence demand. First, as signs point to continued turmoil in Europe sophisticated investors are turning to what are called “real assets” to diversify their portfolios and help anchor their investment strategy. Historically, sophisticated investors have relied on “real assets” such as commodities to diversify their portfolios and to protect themselves against the damaging by-products of inflation and volatility. For many wealthy individuals high quality works of art with strong provenance are becoming the real asset of choice and an important component of strategic portfolio diversification.

Many of the gains realized by sophisticated private investors in recent years have been the result of strategic diversification of their holdings by moving into a broad range of asset classes. Most recently, this trend has extended to art, as investors shift their concern from weathering the financial crisis to anticipating the inflationary effects of rising government spending and debt. The low correlation with other financial assets makes art (or at least art in the form of a well -diversified investment portfolio) an attractive strategy. Also, there is growing interest in irreplaceable tangible assets such as art which exhibit defensive characteristics during weak economic periods.

While many investment professionals agree that real assets provide diversification benefits, there has been surprisingly little research into the appropriate allocation in an investment portfolio. Art used in the right way can enable investors to better tailor their investment strategies to address specific financial and investment concerns (e.g. controlling volatility, boosting returns or hedging against inflation). However, making a long term commitment to art and collectibles is important, as the key benefits are strategic in nature. Further, as most analysts will tell you, a long-term horizon helps reduce concerns about illiquidity and volatility.

Future of art funds

So what does this all mean for the future of art investment vehicles? As the market evolves it is clear that the winners will be those art funds that have the operational flexibility to adapt to market conditions and meet investor needs.

A new generation of investor is emerging for which art and other investments of passion are increasingly becoming an important component of their wealth preservation strategy. Looking forward we can expect a number of key themes emerging:

• Art and other passion investment vehicles will continue to grow and evolve, primarily appealing to sophisticated investors as part of a portfolio diversification strategy.

• Investors will intensify their scrutiny of alternative investments and are expected to conduct even more rigorous due-diligence.

• In 2013, we expect to see a growth of managed art accounts offered by art fund managers targeting high net worth individuals which are personalised and tailored to their specific needs.

• The number of art funds from developing economies will increase and will be directly linked to the economic expansion in these countries and the emergence of a new generation of wealth.

• Art as an alternative investment will gain momentum in 2013, primarily from investor disappointment in financial assets and growing demand for "real assets" which offer a long term store of value.

Forbes appears to be running some blog posts on art as an investment by writer Kathryn Tully. I will be keeping an eye on the posts to see how the financial magazine covers art as an investment. Many financial papers have been covering art as an investment, art as an asset class, art and financial returns, art as an alternative investment, etc. Call it what you may, art as an investment is certainly creeping into the lexicon of the financial press on a regular basis. And, for the most part, that is a good thing for appraisers.

About 2000BC Abraham was summoned by God who asked him to leave the deserts of Mesopotamia and head towards the land of Canaan.

Canaan at this time was prone to unpredictable crop failure and famine. It had one major disadvantage in that it didn't have a life-giving river system like the Nile in Egypt or the Euphrates and Tigres in Mesopotamia. So when it was struck by a severe famine around the 17th century BC, Abraham's grandson Jacob was forced to take his twelve sons to find food in Egypt.

About Chagall:

Pablo Picasso remarked in the 1950s,

 "Chagall will be the only painter left who understands what colour really is".

Chagalls biography includes these comments:

"Chagalls ties with the Bible go very deep, his childhood in Russia had a big influence on his works"

Of the Bible, this is what Chagall said, "Ever since my earliest youth, I have been fascinated with the Bible. I have always believed…that it is the greatest source of poetry of all time…I have sought its reflection in life and art. The Bible is life, an echo of nature, and this is the secret I have endeavored to transmit."

He formed a business relationship with French art dealer Ambroise Vollard. This inspired him to begin creating etchings for a series of illustrated books, including Gogol's Dead Souls, the Bible, and the Fables of La Fontaine. These illustrations would eventually come to represent his finest printmaking efforts.

Chagall spent eight years etching the plates for The Bible Series.

Neptune was the Roman god of water and the sea in Roman mythology and religion. He is the counterpart of the Greek god Poseidon. In the Greek-influenced tradition, Neptune was the brother of Jupiter and Pluto, each of them presiding over one of the three realms of Heaven, Earth and the Netherigions.

There seems to be confusion as to the title of this work.

The Archives created by Albert Field lists the title as Neptune with Poseiden in parenthasis.

Neptune had power over Sea Water and Fresh water both.

As both characters were worshipped by the Romans/Greeks, it makes

sense that Dali might have referenced both in the same work.

Our price for this work is far below what others are asking.

Museum to feature Dalí paintings from Spain

The Dalí Museum in St. Petersburg will welcome 12 works by its famous Spanish surrealist namesake never before seen in America.

"The Royal Inheritance: Dalí works from the Spanish National Collection" exhibit, co-curated by Dalí museum's senior curators Joan Kropf and William Jeffett, runs Oct. 1 through March 13, 2013.
The new exhibit comes to the museum by way of the National Collection of Modern Art in Spain — Madrid's Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía.

"Composition"

(1928) is a large abstract work. The exhibit paintings have never been seen in America.

The Vietnam War was a Cold War-era military conflict that occurred in Vietnam,

Laos, and Cambodia from 1 November 1955 to the fall of Saigon on 30 April 1975.

During the most publicized part of the Viet Nam War,

Salvador Dali was living in New York at the St. Regis Hotel and meeting with the

public on a regular basis.

The Viet Nam war protests and constant news stories shaped the culture of that day

and sparked unrest and chaos among the young people of the United States.

While most people might refer to the destructive nature of weapons,

Dali referred to the Aomic Bomb as "excited particles".

The extensive study of science as a youth gave Dali a unique perspective on things

having to do with energy or decay as a few examples.

The Angel in the image is similar to the iconic Angel we see

in many of Dali's better known graphics.

The Angel of Mercy is referred to in various religeons,

known for healing and compassion. So during a time of great conflict

and destruction, Dali created a series of works having to do with Peace in Viet Nam.

Invisible Sleeping Woman, Horse, Lion was surely the major work of this period; while The Invisible Man is the first double-image picture of a man and a 'woman, a fetish to protect the two lovers, Dali and Gala, from Dali's father and other dangers. Invisible Sleeping Woman, Horse, Lion not only examines Dali's recurring theme of the persistence of desire, but is also an investigation of multiple-image possibilities such as the artist was to explore over and over again in the sequel. The multiple image, to Dali's way of thinking, could extend the "paranoiac" process by adding a second and even third visual dimension.

Detroit Institute of Arts Salvador Dali and other Spanish Masters

How big should an exhibition be? “Five Spanish Masterpieces” packs a mighty wallop, even though you can count the paintings on one hand.

The Detroit Institute of Arts’ great blue period Picasso, “Melancholy Woman,” has returned home after two years on loan to exhibitions across the globe. To celebrate, the DIA has surrounded it with dynamite paintings by El Greco, Velázquez, Goya and Salvador Dali.

Curated by Salvador Salort-Pons, head of European Art at the DIA, the exhibition is spread over three galleries — this is one show that’s not overhung — and sweeps through about 300 years of Spanish art.

Dali and Picasso get their own rooms. Dali style changed later in his career, but his gruesome antiwar picture, “Soft Construction with Boiled Beans” (1936), remains a surrealist landmark.

But it’s the center gallery that makes the show, with portraits of an unknown man by Velázquez and a matador by Goya, plus El Greco’s “The Holy Family with St. Anne and the Infant St. John the Baptist” (1600).

Salvador Dali Homage to Venice

Homage to Venice

Venice is a city in northeast Italy sited on a group of 118 small

islands separated by canals and linked by bridges, and is a top
destination for travlers and tourists.

The name Venice is derived from the ancient Veneti people
who inhabited the region by the 10th century B.C.

Dali and his wife Gala traveled to Venice for vacation with
Coco Chanel and others.

Venice was a favorite spot for Dali as he was influenced by its

architecture and its artworks, and inspired a number of well

known works including this one.

The print shown is embossed.

Here is an image of a portion of the back of the print to show some

of the indented portions of the image thus creating more a

Surreal Art

There are many who create surreal art, but is the art of their own imagination or are they borrowing from others. Some even create art that looks like works by Dali, they add Dali's name and other things related to Dali to the keywords of posts etc., to try and draw the public to images that they then "imply" are by the hand of Salvador Dali. It is important that when you are looking at surreal art and surrealism, to make sure you are clear as to what artists you are looking at, I recently had an email come in from someone asking, "What is the title of this Dali painting?" My reply was very simple... "That is not a Dali painting"

Despite the economic crisis, the art market does not stop breaking records. Since 2008, eleven of the twenty most expensive art purchases have taken place. Less than a week after the sale of Munch’s The Scream ($120m), Orange, Red, Yellow by Marc Rothko sold for $87m.

Several economists assert that art is not the best way to invest. Artwork resale can be extremely complicated because few artists keep the same value on the art market over the years. Moreover, the world of art is unpredictable, and valuing an artwork is not an easy task: it is subjective, although guiding criteria do exist. Sergey Skaterschikov published a report on art investment proving that no artwork purchased for $30m has ever consequently made a profit.

The Times of India concludes that wealthy people buy art to show off.

Salvador Dali in Turkey

An exhibition featuring more than 100 works by peerless Spanish artist Salvador Dali attracted a record number of visitors to Ankara’s Cer Modern Center, according to the museum’s press relations manager.

“We expected to see lots of visitors, but the figures show that the interest is more than we expected,” said Sara Adıbelli. “Cer Modern has opened a new page in the cultural and artistic life of Ankara.”
Some 40,000 people came to the exhibition, with 2,500 people typically coming to see Dali’s work on weekends, she said.
“Many people, both young and old, visited the museum. This is such good news for us because we want a diverse visitor profile. Many visitors also came from other cities near Ankara, such as Kayseri, Mersin, Adana and Eskişehir.”
Many different people who had never come to a museum before traveled to see the Dali exhibition, Adıbelli said.
The traveling exhibition, which was previously in Istanbul, includes 121 lithographs and watercolors from Dali’s print series “The Divine Comedy,” “Traces of Surrealism” and “Dinner with Gala,” which critics regard as exemplary of his symbolist and surrealist style. The series consists of 100 prints, one print for each canto of Dante’s epic poem “Divine Comedy,” plus one cover print. “Traces of Surrealism” is made up of nine lithographic color printings that were made by Dali in Paris in 1971. The surreal atmosphere in the works provides images of a plastic universe that critics say makes it impossible to separate dream from reality. Dali’s main goal was to convert the everyday life to the home of “dream” in a sarcastic manner.
Dali’s “Dinner with Gala” series features 12 colored lithographs. Dali had wished to become a chef since childhood and finally realized this dream at the age of 68. This series includes the menus and recipes of legendary restaurants and chefs, as well as their surrealist gastro-aesthetics stories.
The exhibition started March 23 and ended late last month.

Salvador Dali was a student of history and paid homage

to many historical figures.

Joan of Arc, nicknamed "The Maid of Orléans" is a national heroine of France and a Roman Catholic saint. A peasant girl born in what is now eastern France, who claimed divine guidance, she led the French army to several important victories during the Hundred Years' War, which paved the way for the coronation of Charles VII. She was captured by the Burgundians, transferred to the English in exchange for money, put on trial by the pro-English Bishop of Beauvais for charges of "insubordination and heterodoxy," and burned at the stake as a heretic when she was only 19 years old.

Twenty-five years after the execution, an Inquisitorial court authorized by Pope Callixtus III examined the trial, pronounced her innocent and declared her a martyr. Joan of Arc was beatified in 1909 and canonized in 1920. She is – along with St. Denis, St. Martin of Tours, St. Louis IX, and St. Theresa of Lisieux – one of the patron saints of France. Joan said that she had visions from God that instructed her to recover her homeland from English domination late in the Hundred Years' War. The uncrowned King Charles VII sent her to the siege of Orléans as part of a relief mission. She gained prominence when she overcame the dismissive attitude of veteran commanders and lifted the siege in only nine days. Several more swift victories led to Charles VII's coronation at Reims and settled the disputed succession to the throne.

Lewis Carroll's well know story:

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (commonly shortened to Alice in Wonderland) is an 1865 novel written by English author Charles Lutwidge Dodgson under the pseudonym Lewis Carroll.It tells the story of a girl named Alice who falls down a rabbit hole into a fantasy world (the Wonderland of the title) populated by peculiar and anthropomorphic creatures. The tale plays with logic in ways that have given the story lasting popularity with adults as well as children.

Alice was published in 1865, three years after the Reverend Charles Lutwidge Dodgson and the Reverend Robinson Duckworth rowed in a boat, on 4 July 1862,up the River Thames with the three young daughters of Henry Liddell, (the Vice-Chancellor of Oxford University and Dean of Christ Church) : Lorina Charlotte Liddell (aged 13, born 1849) ("Prima" in the book's prefatory verse); Alice Pleasance Liddell (aged 10, born 1852) ("Secunda" in the prefatory verse); Edith Mary Liddell (aged 8, born 1853) ("Tertia" in the prefatory verse).

The journey began at Folly Bridge near Oxford and ended five miles away in the village of Godstow. To while away time the Reverend Dodgson told the girls a story that, not so coincidentally, featured a bored little girl named Alice who goes looking for an adventure. The girls loved it, and Alice Liddell asked Dodgson to write it down for her. After a lengthy delay—over two years—he eventually did so and on 26 November 1864 gave Alice the handwritten manuscript of Alice's Adventures Under Ground, with illustrations by Dodgson himself.
